Comedy

The red and blue lights are flickering on your screen again. You looked so beautiful, lying there, your face illuminated like the campfire we used to whisper ghost stories around. You said I needed to pay attention to my surroundings, and you even used a pen to point out the blurry figure in the corner of the television but I didn’t want to look at my surroundings because I was looking at you. Remember when we played with hot coals? You threw your head back and cackled, and your eyes glowed orange. I didn’t know what was so funny but I laughed along with you, I just wanted to join in on the fun, in the dark, just trying to cup your grin’s hot ember. Yesterday you declared that comedy is the subversion of expectations, so were your expectations subverted when I buried my head in the crook of your neck and grabbed your hand? Is that why you laughed? You’re shrouded in your theatrics and secrets, and I want to know whats behind those unblinking eyes of yours but for now I wipe the ink dripping from my own- when the episode was over you turned to look at me, you know that? With a grin like July, like the end of all things.
